The holidays are nearly over, the last of the camp gear has (finally) been cleaned, and it’s almost time to kick off weekly Scout meetings again. Whether you’re leading Beavers, Cubs, Scouts or Explorers, that first session back can be a bit of a whirlwind—so here’s a quick guide to getting everything (and everyone) ready.
1. Do a Quick Kit Check
Before you dive into planning, take stock. Do you still have enough neckers for new joiners? Are there badges left over from last term? Is your kit box still mysteriously missing four pegs and the group scissors?

2. Ease Back into Routine
After a long break, not every young person (or leader!) will be ready to jump straight into intense badge work. The first few meetings are great for re-building team spirit, playing silly games, and reminding everyone what it means to be part of the group.
Think campfire songs, team challenges, or a “summer holiday show and tell” where everyone brings a funny photo or story.
3. Welcome the New Starters
New term = new faces. Make sure you’ve got a few simple activities planned that help everyone feel welcome without putting pressure on them. Having enough neckers in the right sizes for newbies is a nice touch—they’ll feel part of the gang from day one.

4. Set the Term’s Tone
Whether you’re planning hikes, camps, or community projects, the start of term is a great time to chat through ideas with the group. Let them help shape what comes next—it gives them ownership and gets everyone excited for the weeks ahead.
Use the first meeting to look back on last term’s highlights and get buzzing about what’s coming next. A few printed photos from summer camp never hurt!
5. Give Parents a Nudge Too
A quick reminder email or handout can go a long way: dates, kit lists, term plans, and a little plug to check the state of their young person’s necker (we’ve seen them after spaghetti night). And if anyone needs a replacement, we’ve got plenty waiting in the shop.
Let’s Make This Term a Good One
The return to weekly Scout meetings is a brilliant chance to reset, refocus and bring the group back together. A little prep now means fewer surprises later—and a much smoother ride into autumn.
